together. He has had 2 episodes. Each episode is life threatening First one was
Sept 2013. He had a stay in ICU, received 1 blood transfusion during this episode.
The cost for his owners was $1700. They were having terrible family issues and
coupled with his illness and expense could not care for him any longer. When we
received him we did a lot of lab work, determined this blood work while not normal
was stable enough to be neutered and have a dental. He did well for the next year.
Early in 2015 he had another episode.. Very nearly died.. We asked the vets to do
everything they could to save Leo. After a great deal of difficulty searching 3
counties blood was located that was a match. He required 2 units of blood. This time
it took a while to pull him thru. That episode was $2400. Dr. Kelly Weaver at Tampa
Bay Referral in Largo, Fl is the specialist that is caring for Leo. She has
recommended monthly lab work just to monitor and hopefully pick up on when he starts
to go into another episode. She has recommended he not ever be vaccinated again. So
far there has not been any reason for any more surgeries but it work probably be an
issue as well. Leo is an adorable little blue roan English cocker. He is a talker
and loves to grumble.. Leo needs a home with someone able and willing to provide
medical care.It is expensive and he could die even with the care. To adopt Leo we
would require someone with a strong vet ref and history, have the person discuss the
Evans Disease with their vet. Then we can have a 3 way conversation with the vet and
potential adopter. We love Leo and want to be assured he goes to a home that
is willing and able to do everything to pull him thru any episodes he may have. He
is a very happy little guy when he is well.
